Flash Review: A Million Ways To Die In The West [2014]
I braced for the worst… and it never came. I had all but given up hope after the ghastly preview for Seth MacFarlane’s latest surfaced, but surprisingly, no, the best bits weren’t in the trailer and there are actually clever jokes and funny gags (few, but there are) amongst the juvenile jokes and scatological humor. MacFarlane, writer/director/star of AMWTDITW, is not the ideal leading man (I still prefer him as a singer), but he’s carried through by the incredibly charismatic Charlize Theron. I can’t believe there’s a movie where Neil Patrick Harris takes a dump in a hat and I’m not telling people to avoid it, but I actually was very much entertained by the whole crazy ordeal, with its pop culture references, celebrity cameos and anachronistic dialog. There are a million better films than this one, but there are also a million worse.
THat’s a great review Fernando, pretty fair too. I’ve definitely definitely seen worse but I think I came in with the reverse levels of expectation. I was very excited and it kind of let me down. But you’re absolutely right, there still remains a mix of scatological and intelligent/clever jokes all throughout.

Thanks, Tom! And yeah, I think the main reason why I enjoyed it as much as I did was precisely because of my low expectations. Sorry you didn’t have a better experience.

Eh, I did laugh a lot every now and then. . .when the jokes landed they landed hard! And it’s always a bonus getting to see more Charlize Theron. 😉

Yeah. I lost it after the line about the “firecracker wrapped in roast beef”. Hilarious!
And yeah, as always Charlize Theron looks great. And she has a great knack for comedy.

I’m not MacFarlane’s biggest fan but w/ a cast that include Theron & Neeson, I definitely will rent this one!

There are enough fun things to warrant that rental. Although, most of the humor won’t be your cup of tea, I think.

Wish I laughed more. Also wish that MacFarlane didn’t use so many of the same jokes, over and over again. Good review.

Yeah, he did recycle a few of them. I also wished I’d laughed a lot more but I’m just happy I laughed. Period.

So, the definition of average I’m guessing?

I’m curious about this one, actually, after Mark’s review and now yours. Good review. Glad you enjoyed it more than most. Would you also recommend that I see Ted? (I myself am kind of surprised I haven’t seen that one.)

Yeah. It’s got some laughs (even though it’s not as funny as it could be) and I’m a huge supporter of Mark Wahlberg, so I say go ahead and see it. Also, it’s got a foul-mouthed teddy bear. That’s a great thing.
