Coming Attractions: Birdman + Cantinflas + The Interview
Holy shit, it’s a great day for trailers, everybody! Seriously, I’m brimming with excitement over these three late-2014 releases.
First, we got the heavily anticipated (at least by me) Birdman, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores Perros). His follow-up to the superb Biutiful (this here blog’s first review) is unlike anything we’ve seen from the Mexican director. In this trippy comedy, “a washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory“.
Birdman stars -get this- Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Andrea Riseborough, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Ryan. WHOA.
Next, we have Cantinflas. That name may not ring any bells, but over here, the man’s a legend and has even been inmortalized in verbal form (“cantinflear” means “to speak in a silly and nonsensical manner, without meaning“). Mario Moreno, an iconic comedian in Mexico, gained international fame (and a Golden Globe nomination) when he starred in the Oscar-winning Around the World in 80 Days.
The biopic is directed by Sebastián del Amo and stars Óscar Jaenada (The Losers, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) as the man with the quirky mustache. Also aboard are Michael Imperioli, Joaquín Cosío and Luis Gerardo Méndez.
Finally, we get another James Franco + Seth Rogen collaboration. Now, the trailer is not super funny but it does show a lot of potential, and the movie’s premise is just superb.
Dave Skylark (Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.
I mean, that’s a recipe for hilarity right there. The Interview is directed by Rogen and frequent collaborator/BFF Evan Goldberg.
I certainly am interested in the first two trailers. Michael Keaton being one of my favorites ever since Batman, and the bio for one of my grandmother’s all-time favorites, Cantinflas, looks fantastic. I am, though, definitely tiring of James Franco and Seth Rogen. Thanks, Fernando.

I have a theory. A Rogen/Franco outing is only as good as their character names. (An extremely subjective opinion, sure. But let’s go with that.) So in this case, Dave Skylark: A+
That’s one of the more ridiculous names I’ve known Franco to undertake. So look forward to The Interview!!!
And Birdman looks pretty crazy. I hope I get to check that out. Cantinflas also looks pretty cool. An all around solid collection of trailers.

LOL, that’s a great theory. We’ll have to wait until the movie comes out to see if it pans out.

Wow, another great ensemble for Mr. Iñárritu! As for Rogen/Franco’s new movie, well I’m not a big fan of either so I’m not really that interested in it.

Definitely a fantastic cast. Now if only they’d confirm his movie with DiCaprio and Hardy!
And yeah, they’re certainly not for everyone.

Obviously I’m here for the Imperioili!! Thanks for the heads up with that Fernando. I will add that The Interview trailer didnt even make me crack a smile…….could be the first of their films I don’t like. It is meant to be a comedy right? 🙂

Yeah, hope Cantinflas delivers.
LOL, yeah, it’s supposed to be a comedy. To be honest, I didn’t laugh a lot at the trailer but I see a lot of potential there.
