Flash Review: Edge of Tomorrow [2014]
Can we please keep Tom Cruise for 50 more years? The man still has it and it’s all on display in Edge of Tomorrow, a thoroughly satisfying and unexpectedly solid actioner. At 51, Cruise is every bit the action hero he was decades ago, his charisma unscathed by all the couch-jumping and Scientologizing (I made up a word), and his precise comedic timing resurfacing as it not so often does. He’s matched by Emily Blunt, fantastic in a different sort of role for her: a sexy, strong soldier, nicknamed “Full Metal Bitch”, that probably was great preparation for her rumored role as Selina Kyle in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While EOT does lag around the middle a bit, it’s an inventive and very fun flick, filled with sweat and dirt and blood and metal and testosterone; in other words, a near-perfect summer blockbuster.
I didn’t know what to make of the trailer, EoT just looked like another overblown action film with no soul. How surprised I was to find this to be an enjoyable sci-fi romp which takes the Groundhog Day template and does something interesting with it. I’m trying not to think about the ending too much which didn’t make much sense, but a terrific review of a great film!

I’m with AndyK. The ending is awful. However the rest of the film is so good I still enjoyed it. That first half was near-perfect. The second half? Not so much.

I enjoyed pretty much the whole film. Wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending, but it didn’t bother me that much, either.

Such a fun time, regardless of the gimmick they use. Good review.

Great flash review buddy. Think we have found the sleeper hit of big budget blockbusters (if ever there were such a thing)… This was a lot of fun. I didn’t find the ending to be too out of whack. Rushed, perhaps. But it worked. I’m hoping to God there won’t be sequels though….

Thanks! And I don’t know how well EOT performed at the box office during the weekend, but it deserves to be a hit. It’s what a summer blockbuster’s supposed to be! I’m with you on the sequels!

I did and loved it! As I mentioned, and as others reported, the box office for this was surprising low for the U.S. Great overseas, but not here. Went last evening with my daughter for the 6:05 screening and it was only two-thirds full. Kinda shocking, really.

It’s great that you loved it but it sucks that it’s not doing so well at home. It really deserves to!

nice review Fernando. agree that Cruise and Blunt are charismatic and gave good performances. but i was disappointed by the film(my review might surprise you). hasn’t been a good week for me at the movies, both Maleficent and this didn’t meet expectations.

Well, hope the next one you see satisfies. I had fun with both the movies you mentioned.

This was definitely a pleasant surprise for me. The trailer made it look so dour and serious. And to be honest I am pretty over the whole ‘groundhog day’ plot device. But this took the refreshing path of not taking itself too seriously and was a much stronger film for it.

Definitely. A very fun, unpretentious flick. Cruise and Blunt were great.

Finally managed to see it the past week and it rocked, really enjoyed it a lot! But if it’s got action and some storyline involving time loops it doesn’t take much for me to be happy 😉

Will be dropping by more again….had set filters on my email to keep me updated on posts, but there were so many that I basically did not have the time to go through all my filters. Just removed them, so will now see all emails coming in and not miss out on stuff I want to read
