Coming Attractions: Magic in the Moonlight + Foxcatcher

More than 9 months to go and Oscar buzz is already in the air.

Anything by Woody Allen is bound to get at least a little love at a couple ceremonies and this could follow Cate Blanchett’s Best Actress victory with some more little golden men. Magic in the Moonlight is decidedly lighter than Blue Jasmine, at least judging from its trailer. MITM is “a romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle. Personal and professional complications ensue”. It stars Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden and Jacki Weaver.

Then there’s Foxcatcher, “based on the true story of Mark Schultz, an Olympic wrestler whose relationship with mentor John du Pont and brother Dave Schultz would lead to unlikely circumstances”.

It’s a drama, of course, and stars Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and a transformed Steve Carell. Foxcatcher is directed by Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball).

This is the first I’m hearing about Magic in the Moonlight, but it sounds superb. I do like Woody Allen but unfortunately Blue Jasmine just struck all the wrong notes for me. Though I did think Blanchett was just phenomenal. And as you pointed out, the more lighthearted nature of this upcoming one is more enticing to me.

And Foxcatcher is going to be incredible. Steve Carell — wow.

Well, hope Allen redeems himself with MITM. I loved Jasmine but I’m also a big fan of the lighter Allen.

And yes! I have high hopes for that one. Carell underwent such a transformation, inside and out it seems.

Hi Fernando! Hmmm, Woody Allen is a hit and miss for me, still not sure about Magic in the Moonlight though it certainly looks beautiful visually. Might be a rental 🙂
