Scattered Frames: The Hunt for Mr. Banks
Hello everybody! Welcome to the latest edition of Scattered Frames. Today I review two wildly different films, both equally satisfying in their own way. Check out what I have to say about Jagten (a.k.a. The Hunt) and Saving Mr. Banks!
Jagten: Infuriating, heartbreaking and just fucking brilliant, Jagten has been hailed as one of the finest foreign movies the world has had the honor of seeing in recent years, and rightfully so. A misguided child with a little crush on her dad’s best friend turns into supervillain in this harrowing Danish film. Mads Mikkelsen’s performance is simply superb and he’s helped by the outstanding turns from the young Annika Wedderkopp and Lasse Fogelstrøm. 4.5/5
Saving Mr. Banks: I’m considering getting little Mickey ears as my first tattoo, so you could infer from that statement if I’m a Disney fan or not. Mr. Banks is absolute porn for Disney buffs, so of course I’ve enjoyed it greatly. Despite the inner turmoil and rocky past of P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), this is a happy film that will put a smile on your face, dammit! It does indulge a bit on the backstory, but with a cast as fantastic as this one -Colin Farrell and a pitch-perfect Emma Thompson stand out- you won’t need a spoonful of sugar to make this one go down. It’s so great on its own. 4.5/5
We’re on the same wavelength for this pair films, Fernando.

I really loved Saving Mr. Banks. I felt like it showed us the different creative spirits that go into creating the stories we do love. I’m interested in looking up the other though too. Cheers.

Liked Saving Mr. Banks. I was actually surprised by how dramatic it got at certain points. Very emotional but very enjoyable, too. Still need to see The Hunt. Great reviews!

Very random pairing, but two solid films. A great double feature, all that was missing was the rain!

I didn’t feel as strongly about The Hunt as you did, but I agree that it was a phenomenal movie. My biggest complaint was that it seemed like a bit of…exaggeration. Then again, it felt like the opposite of that, as well. And the ending with the guy shooting the deer (won’t say any more than that for the sake of not spoiling it), I felt entirely like I’d seen that before to end a movie.
Haven’t seen Saving Mr. Banks, but I know your score’s a little higher than mine would be (and I will see it, I hope, after your review and others), given that you’re gaga over Disney movies. 🙂

I thought it was pretty understated and realistic, actually, And about the ending, there’s a similar sequence in Michael Clayton. Maybe you were thinking about that one?

I haven’t seen Michael Clayton, but while I’m at it, the opening seemed familiar to me too. That involved a deer running away. I’d estimate that as much as 1% (which is a lot ahahah) of the films I’ve ever seen began with a deer running away. For some reason, Twilight’s the first to come to mind, but I feel like Zodiac also opened that way too. Again, lots, and lots, of others. It’s just a cliché.

Yeah, it’s pretty common. Oh, and you should see Michael Clayton. It’s AMAZING.
