All around the Globes
I’m still on an award-season high from the SAG nominations yesterday (you can check 18 things I’m thrilled about here) and this morning, the Golden Globe nominees were announced. Here’s my breakdown of the nominations.
To celebrate:
- SAG nominees Matthew McConaughey, Tom Hanks, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Emma Thompson, Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto, Daniel Brühl, Barkhad Abdi, Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts are up for Globes as well (yay!)
- Idris Elba, surprising SAG-snub Robert Redford, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac, Joaquin Phoenix, Kate Winslet, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Adams, Julie Delpy, Bradley Cooper and Sally Hawkins join the party (yay!)
- My boy Alfonso Cuarón is up for Best Director for his stunning Gravity, which is also up for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Score and Actress (Sandra Bullock)
- Rush, one of my favorites of 2013, is also up for Best Motion Picture – Drama
- Justin Timberlake, one of my favorite singers and whose insanely awesome concert I attended last month, is up for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture for “Please Mr. Kennedy”, a track from the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis
To be sad about:
- No nominations for The Butler, which got a lot of love at the SAGs but no mentions for Forest Whitaker or Oprah Winfrey
- No Joel Edgerton for Gatsby. I know it was a really long shot, but I would’ve loved seeing him nominated for a fantastic performance.
- No James Gandolfini for Enough Said. His last screen performance won’t be honored with a Globe.
To scratch your head:
- American Hustle, Her, and Before Midnight are comedies and Saving Mr. Banks is a drama, according to the HFPA.
A little trivia:
- There are three Latin nominees this year: Alfonso Cuarón (México), Oscar Isaac (Guatemala) and Daniel Brühl. Yes, Daniel was born in Spain to a German father and Spanish mother, and his full name is Daniel César Martín Brühl González Domingo.
- Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1983, to a Kenyan family, and was raised primarily in Kenya.
I didn’t know that about Brühl. Good stuff, Fernando.

That’s what I’m most excited for, Bruhl’s nomination 😀
Great coverage here Fernando! You’ve got both SAG and GG covered, well done!

Yeah, it’s one of my favorite mentions this year. And thanks, Ruth!

Hard for me to judge the Globes too harshly, but I am most disappointed Wadjda didn’t even receive nomination for Best Foreign Film. Also don’t like Gravity’s score nomination.

Yeah, it’s a bit surprising to not see Wadjda on the list, but GG’s foreign category is a bit odd. Maybe it will be up for an Oscar.

I certainly hope so. I haven’t seen most of the rest of the Globe’s nominees (yet), but I do think Wadjda far superior to Blue Is the Warmest Color.

Aw man, I am SO behind on this year’s nominees.

Despite seeing almost one hundred twenty-five 2013 films, I feel much the same, actually. 🙂

Very weird that Before Midnight is down as a comedy. Sure it has its funny moments, but there’s no way I would call it a comedy!

I know, right? It seems so weird.

I’ve been very critical of the Globes in the past but this year they’ve actually very much improved. I’m confused by what the definition of q drama and comedy is for the HFPA, but the nominees are good.

Yes. At least they got THAT right! haha. Really good grop of nominees this year.

Didn’t know that by Bruhl! At first I thought it was a joke! I also think he should win something for his performance in Rush

LOL. It’s weird but it’s not a joke. And yeah, he was fantastic in that film.

I’m happy with a lot of these nominations, although the GG normally have some really odd nominations (The Tourist, Burlesque etc), which always makes them wacky and fun. So, I’m a little disappointed there isn’t any of that this year.
What films/performances are you rooting for this year?

You’re right. No crazy noms to make fun of this year.
I’m rooting for Gravity, Rush, and even though I haven’t seen it yet, American Hustle.

I’d love it if Before Midnight and 12 Years a Slave got everything they were nominated for. For separate reasons, but I feel so strongly about both films.

I think 12YAS is going to sweep, at least at the Oscars. And while I don’t think Julie Delpy win for Before, I’m so happy to see her nominated.
