Rush [2013]
Directed by: Ron Howard
Written by: Peter Morgan
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Alexandra Maria Lara, Olivia Wilde, Pierfrancesco Favino, Natalie Dormer, Christian McKay
Oh, look! Thor can act!
I have to say that, before Rush, I thought Hemsworth was incredibly wooden but he has won me over with his charismatic performance in this drama directed by Ron Howard.
Not being the biggest fan of the Aussie actor or the American director or F1 racing, I walked into Rush with very low expectations and the faintest hope that I would at least not be bored to tears by the film that many of my blogging comrades have been naming one of the best of the year, yet I was convinced I wouldn’t enjoy.
I did, and a lot. This is the perfect “guys’ movie” of 2013, a riveting film with exhilarating action and a lot of ripe opportunities for drama that certainly do not go to waste.
While wives Olivia Wilde and Alexandra Maria Lara are very solid, it’s the boys’ show. The aforementioned Hemsworth is pretty good as cocky James Hunt but it is Daniel Brühl who carries this movie. His towering performance as Niki Lauda is poised for awards success and plays a big part in making Rush one of the finest films of the year so far.
I’m just like you. I went in with no expectations or any real excitement, but walked out really blown away. Hemsworth, indeed, proved he can act but it really is Bruhl who walks off with the movie. I am so much hoping that he’s rewarded come Oscar time, with at least a nomination.

Glad we agree. Let’s hope he gets a nod.

I highly doubt this movie’s going to get much love for itself come Oscar time, however, if it does just so happen to, then I at least hope Bruhl is the main one. He’s so good and allows us to feel sorry for a character that is inherently unlikable, and a bit selfish, yet, we still care. Good review.

Yeah, I found myself siding more with him than with Hunt during the movie. And yeah, if anyone has Oscar chances, it’s Bruhl. Hopefully they’ll recognize him.

Love, love, love this film. It’s just as much for the ladies as the gents though 😛

Glad to know the ladies love it as well.

My boss and I were just talking about this earlier today. I love this too Fernando, esp. Bruhl’s performance. He’s becoming one of my fave actors as he was good in The Fifth Estate too. Yep, like Abbi said, it’s not just for the boys 😀

Such a fun movie, right? Loved Bruhl in it.
And I see now that it’s been a hit with women too. What I meant is that Rush has all the elements to get guys in theaters, but I’m glad it appeals to both sexes.

Well I like the rivalry/friendship aspect and the drive of these two men. I’m more drawn to Lauda than Hunt as a character though both men have flaws obviously.

Their rivalry is fascinating, and what makes their respect for each other feel authentic. Loved when Hunt beat up that damn reporter!
I also identified more with Lauda.

Short and sweet, I like it!! This movie rocked. Then again, a huge fan of racing films over here. And Ron Howard. How could it disappoint?

Haha! That was my reaction! I thought he was so bad in Thor, Avengers and SWATH. But he’s very solid here.

I forgot he was in SWATH. Such an AWFUL MOVIE.

Ugh. The worst. Luckily I went with a friend and had a good time making fun of everything but it was horrid.

Good concise review Fernando! I still need to check this one out. I’m thinking I will probably highly enjoy it, as I like Hemsworth but I’m not a particular fan of Ron Howard or Formula 1. I also like Daniel Bruhl quite a bit. Have you ever seen GOOD BYE LENIN? Probably my favorite movie of his so far.

Thanks! Haven’t seen Goodbye Lenin, actually! Although many of my friends have recommended it to me!
