Holy surprise, Batman!
Oscar-winner Ben Affleck has been outed by several media sources (The Wrap and IGN, among others) as the next actor who’ll play Batman. Not only that, he’ll don the cape for 2015’s heavily anticipated Man of Steel sequel, which will unite arguably the biggest superheroes in mainstream media: Batman and Superman.
After much speculation stemming from Comic-Con‘s huge announcement, we now have a new Dark Knight. Tyler Hoechlin and Orlando Bloom were rumored frontrunners, and Christian Bale received a 50-million offer to reprise the role that catapulted him into superstardom.
I was personally rooting for either Joel Edgerton or Josh Brolin, two proven talents that could bring some weight to the role as well as look good in the suit.
I have to say I wasn’t expecting an announcement so soon and I really wasn’t expecting Affleck to get the role. I’m a bit bummed that neither of my top picks got the gig, as I’m sure that either one of them would’ve been so good as the Caped Crusader. But then I think about fuckin’ Orlando Bloom in that coveted part and I shudder, so I’m thankful for the choice.
I’ve said before that I prefer Ben Affleck as a writer/director. Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo are all very good films and a hell of a way to start a filmography. He’s three-for-three so far behind the camera. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t think he’s a good actor (even if underrated baby brother Casey is so much better) and I have faith that he’ll do a solid job in the role. He better, right?
Affleck will join Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale as the lucky actors who have gotten the opportunity to play the coolest superhero ever. Please don’t screw it up, Benny.
I like the choice. Thanks for the heads up!

Would have loved Edgerton or Brolin.. but I am… really, really excited for this and I don’t know why.

Yeah. Wasn’t my first or second choice BY FAR, but I’m glad with the decision. All the nerd rage will really bring out the best in his performance, I think.

I like the choice. With tongue in cheek, I posted this on Twitter. It got retweeted 7 times.

Yeah, I’ll second that sentiment about not screwing it up. I like the guy but I don’t see him in this role. I guess I don’t have much of a say in the matter. Le sigh. . . all I see happening for this movie so far is in one big giant rush. hopefully the final product won’t feel as slapped-together as it does right now. . . but that’s just my view

Yeah, now that you mention it, it’s a bit rushed. I’m willing to give Affleck the Ben-efit of the doubt, though! haha

I think Ben Affleck belongs behind the camera. This is making me have terrible Daredevil flashbacks.

I’ve forgotten all about Daredevil. I prefer him behind the camera, but he’s done great work in front of it too, I think.

Oddly enough I really liked him in Hollywoodland, which I think is massively underrated.

I actually don’t remember that one very well. Need to watch it again.

I really wasn’t expecting an announcement so soon either. Bit out of the blue, this one. I’m really not convinced as of yet. I can only see this being a more lighter tone to the character. I can’t see Affleck being as dark or intense in the role as Bale.

I don’t think so, either. I just hope he does a good job and tries to give us something different than what Bale offered.

I was pretty convinced I was going to get the role, but Affleck was never someone I thought would beat me to it. I like him, just maybe not as Batman. Here’s hoping he surprises people 🙂

I hope so too! And sorry you didn’t get the part. Maybe they could still cast you as Alfred.

Where did this come from! Still don’t believe it. I’d prefer anyone else.

Really out of the blue. Here’s hoping Ben Affleck impresses us.

I can imagine him as a billionaire maybe but as the dark crusader who brings fear to hardened criminals I don’t see it at all!
My interest in this film has dropped significantly, only a spectacular trailer will win me after this.

I’m a little uneasy on the decision. I would have liked if Warner Bros. got someone who was less recognizable, plus I still have the bad taste of Daredevil in my mouth. But who knows, it could turn out really well.

Let’s hope it does! Yeah, maybe a less famous actor would’ve worked better. Who knows? We’ll have to wait until 2015!

Hi Fernando! I’m warming up to Ben’s casting since I posted my thoughts last Friday. Of course I’d rather have my pick got the role, but we shall see I guess. I agree that he’d have been better as a writer/director but rumor has it he’s supposed to be a consultant for the screenplay too.

Glad you’re warming up to Ben! I would’ve liked my pick to get the role too (Edgerton or Borlin) but I think Affleck’ll do fine.
