Flash Review: Pacific Rim [2013]
Pacific Rim really spoke to the little kid within, but did next to nothing to sate the 23 year-old. There’s cliché after cliché after cheesy line in this loud, repetitive story, where visuals take center stage and everything else falls by the wayside. At the core of Rim, we get a very bland central pair (Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi); luckily we have Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman to save the cast. If it looks like I’m being too kind on this film with my star rating as opposed to my review, it’s because, after all is said and done, it is fun, and the visuals are really that good.
I really enjoyed this film, but like you said, its visually driven and there isn’t much else to assist the story. Great review!

It’s a pretty hollow script underneath it all, but I had a good time to say the least. Good review.

Hollow is a great way to put it, yeah. I had a good time as well, but I wanted it to be better! haha

I understand what you’re saying about the movie doing a better job of pleasing the kid in you than the adult (nice point). I gave the movie a lot of credit for that though. The fun, exciting battles bought a lot of forgiveness from me regarding the numerous flaws in the rest of the film 😉

Thanks, Fogs! And yeah, you’re right about that. Some of the fights are pretty fun and they make up for other stuff they did wrong.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen more similarly middling scores for this one, overall I was happy but it could have been so much better. I agree that the central pair are a huge reason for why the film doesn’t work as well as it should.

Glad we agree. And yes, it could’ve been so much better!

You summed up my opinion of this movie so well. It was visually brilliant but lacking in every other department.

I’m very glad we agree, then 🙂

Nice review man! I haven’t seen the film yet, but your review is about what I was expecting to read.

Thanks! Hope you enjoy it more than I did, though.

Fun, but not deep, huh? Well, that’s kind of what I was expecting anyway, so that’s not disappointing.

I wasn’t expecting a lot of depth (it’s a robots vs. monsters film after all), but didn’t expect it to be this hollow, either.

When I read flash review I thought you were gonna be naked.
Despite all of this films flaws I still had a fun time watching it. I was reading today that they gave del Toro the green light to get started on a sequel.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m fully clothed.
Glad you liked it, but it just didn’t do it for me. Surprised they greenlit a sequel considering it was a flop in the US.

Hey, I thought you’d give it a much lower rating. 3 stars is not bad actually, though as you know I love this more than you. As I said before, there are plenty of cheese on this one but to me, it’s GOOD cheese, and I find it to be quite savory 😀

Yeah, anything below 3 stars wouldn’t be very fair. I thought it was very cheesy and clichéd but at the same time I had fun and I LOVED the visuals.

Well glad that you still find something you liked. You didn’t like the score? I thought that was truly the BEST thing about the film.

I liked that, too, while the movie was playing, but I’m having trouble remembering it now.

What?? I’ve been listening to that almost every day now. I love listening to it during a workout too 😀

I enjoyed this film BECAUSE it was so campy. The cheesiness was what made it so laugh out loud hilarious. Even Idris Elba was in on the joke. He had two emotions: pissed and very pissed. So much fun.

I have a hard time enjoying that kind of thing, so that’s why it didn’t really work for me.

I LOVED Pacific Rim! Shame you didn’t enjoy it as much as I did, although I think my crush on Idris Elba added to my enjoyment considerably. Have you seen Luther? He is the embodiment of badass in that! I can’t wait to see him in the Nelson Mandela biopic.

Looking forward to the Mandela biopic but no, haven’t seen Luther, although I’ve heard great things about it. Elba is pretty good but he wasn’t enough to save Pac Rim for me. Glad you loved it, though.

Fair enough. I was kinda, you know, hoping for a post-apocalyptic Pan’s Labyrinth though. 🙂

That would’ve been great!

And perhaps even sadder…

I didn’t think Pac Rim was sad at all. It certainly had the potential but none of the deaths really affected me.

I didn’t see it. I meant sadder than Pan’s hahahh.
