Flash Review: Anna Karenina [2012]
You know when you’re bowling and you knock down all the pins except for one? That’s how Dixie Chassay and Jina Jay, who did the casting for Anna Karenina, must’ve (or should’ve felt). Keira Knightley, Alicia Vikander, Kelly McDonald and especially Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen and Domhnall Gleeson are absolutely fantastic in their respective roles. Aaron Johnson, on the other hand, is woefully miscast. You never buy his Count Vronsky as this Russian Casanova. He’s just some horny kid with bleach-blond hair. Boo! That major qualm aside, Joe Wright’s (Atonement, Hanna) latest is a lush, involving production and a treat for the senses.
Yeah, I need to see. Hmm… perhaps a future duo post. Thanks, Fernando.

LOL. Love the “Flash Review” actually using The Flash 😀 Thats good stuff.
Yeah, I agree, I liked this movie, generally, but somehow it wasn’t great.

LOL. Thanks, Fogs 😀
Yeah, I think it can’t be great, since most of the characters are so unlikeable. And Johnson was terrible.

Good review Fernando. It’s a beautiful movie, but not at all special. Sort of dull, actually.

I didn’t find it dull, but I can definitely understand those who did. Thanks!

I have to admit that I hated Anna Karenina. It felt like it went on for eternity. It did look fabulous though.

LOL, I can understand that. And indeed it looked fabulous!

Not a fan of period dramas to be honest. I would probably give this a whirl though, sounds interesting enough. Nice one Fernando.

Yeah, not the biggest fan of those either but you could do a lot worse. The acting and visuals are superb.

Good review Fernando. I’m interested in seeing this one, but it’s not really a priority. I haven’t read the book (and yes I do sort of think I should hahah). Plus I’ve seen people all over the place with this one. Usually that entices me to see where I fit on the spectrum, but I’m just afraid I’ll hate it.

Thanks. And yeah, I know what you mean. It’s been divisive. I liked it a lot and it would’ve been great if it weren’t for Aaron Johnson. Haven’t read the book either, buut don’t really want to. Besides, it’s too long!

I must admit I have a soft spot in my heart for Keira Knightly & period pieces. This was pretty extraordinary on its own terms however. Director Joe Wright’s re-envisioning of the cherished novel treats the material with the reverence it deserves, but represents the production in a hyper-realized theatrical treatment that beautifully befits the story. His singular vision is a wonder to behold. Great review Fernando!

Thanks, and me too! I love Keira and I always defend her because many people seem to really hate her and I don’t understand why.
I really enjoyed Joe Wright’s vision and the movie would’ve been excellent if it wasn’t for Aaron Johnson, in my opinion.
