Flash Review: Beasts of the Southern Wild
BOTSW is this year’s Tree of Life in a “I can’t even begin to explain what goes on or the symbolism but I was so taken by everything” way. I was drawn to Hushpuppy, more for the way she was written and her insightful voiceovers than for Quvenzhané Wallis’s commendable but, in my opinion, not quite Oscar-worthy performance. Dwight Henry is brilliant as her tough-lovin’ dad, Wink. Lucy Alibar and Benh Zeitlin’s script, as well as striking cinematography and a beautiful score (by Dan Romer and, again, Zeitlin) are the best things about this indie darling that’s a stark reminder that sometimes the ties that bind us to home and our community can be the biggest obstacles in our lives.
Great job of fitting in the review to the new format 🙂

Nice review, the new Flash Review format seems to work 😀

Thanks. This format will come in handy when I have little time or not much to say about a film. Hope you enjoy BOTSW once you see it.

Now if you had given this anything less than four stars, a flash review would probably fit. You (and you specifically) could probably elaborate about why everyone seems to love it. I just don’t see what all the hype is about.

Even though I didn’t support many of the characters’ actions, I loved the writing, the music, and the visuals. Those were the reasons I liked the film as much as I did. But I guess it isn’t for everyone.

Hmm okay. Guess it just wasn’t for me.

I didn’t like the film as much as you did, but the performances and the music were absolutely fantastic.

I thought The Master was 2012’s Tree of Life, but anyway, I LOVED this film. I would be so happy if Quvenzhané Wallis won Best Actress. Probably not gonna happen, but one can dream.

I really dug Wallis in this but I am not sure she would have been nominated if she was not so young. Whats your take on that?

Yeah, maybe.
