Flash Review: Beasts of the Southern Wild
BOTSW is this year’s Tree of Life in a “I can’t even begin to explain what goes on or the symbolism but I was so taken by everything” way. I was drawn to Hushpuppy, more for the way she was written and her insightful voiceovers than for Quvenzhané Wallis’s commendable but, in my opinion, not quite Oscar-worthy performance. Dwight Henry is brilliant as her tough-lovin’ dad, Wink. Lucy Alibar and Benh Zeitlin’s script, as well as striking cinematography and a beautiful score (by Dan Romer and, again, Zeitlin) are the best things about this indie darling that’s a stark reminder that sometimes the ties that bind us to home and our community can be the biggest obstacles in our lives.
