Talk about disappointing. I was definitely ready to give my abs a full workout, but with the chuckles that Ted delivered in lieu of the belly laughs I had come to expect, I think I might have to do a few sit-ups before hitting the sack. Ted’s been touted as the funniest movie of the year but I just couldn’t see why.
Maybe I’m just very picky with my comedies, but I found it only mildly funny (and the best jokes were in the trailer). The novelty of our furry main character wears off pretty fast. Once you get past the cute teddy bear, you find Ted to be no more than an obnoxious, vulgar thing with zero respect for anybody.
His BFF John is pretty unlikeable as well, but he’s brought to life in a fantastic comedic performance by the vastly underrated Mark Wahlberg. It’s Giovanni Ribisi, though, who steals the show as a creepy fan of Ted. Writer/director/voice actor Seth MacFarlane is undeniably talented but, after this, it’s evident that his skills are better suited to the small screen.
Check out ‘Klown’ Fernando. That’s a real ‘funniest film of the year’ contender. In fact, I seem to recall some film critic saying something very similar in their review… http://www.cine-vue.com/2012/07/film-review-klown-us-release.html

Your review upset me, I want to see this really bad. I know Mark Hobin really liked this one. But, overall, I’ve heard mixed things on this. Witch one should I watch first? Ted, 21 Jump Street, or The Five-Year Engagement?

It’s not as funny as I expected but you’ll still laugh a bit. You should watch 21JS (I found it slightly better), then Ted. Only watch Five-Year Engagement if you’re a big fan of Jason Segel, Emily Blunt or Chris Pratt. It’s not that good.

TED is the funniest film I have seen in years, I was tears all the way through it! Wahlberg was superb, and Ted was a brilliant character! Honestly, cant wait to see his again and I cant understand people not finding this laugh out loud constantly funny!!
This is tied with Batman as my cinematic highlight of the year. 🙂

Haha well, ultimately it’s a matter of each and everyone’s particular sense of humor, and I didn’t find it as funny as I thought I would. Ted is cute and funny and all but I grew sick of it (him?) after a while. Wahlberg was great but I hated his character. He was such a loser. He made me laugh as well but sometimes he really got on my nerves. Mila Kunis’ character had weird shifts in attitude but ultimately was way out of Wahlberg’s league.

I didn’t even know who MacFarlane was until this one came out so that goes to show how much I care about his brand of comedy. I’m not that interested in this one to be honest.

I was interested because I loved the trailer and I’m a big fan of Mark Wahlberg. Guess the reason I loved the trailer is that it featured all the best jokes. And Wahlberg is very good in this one but his character is so obnoxious.

nice review Fernando. haven’t seen this one yet but am usually not too fond of comedies with vulgar and obnoxious characters. however i do like the idea of the talking Teddy bear being friends with Mark Whalberg. So i might give this a go, but with low expectations, per your review.

Yeah, do so, maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I tend to like movies with vulgar characters but they need to have some redeeming qualities and Ted and John (Wahlberg) didn’t have any.

I laughed a lot throughout this film. I will admit, however, comedy is the most subjective of all genres so not surprising what one person finds funny, another will not. Still, as the highest grossing comedy of 2012, this seemed to connect with a lot of people. For once the hype delivered.

I loved your opening lines here! I’m still yet to see this, all because of the trailer – none of it made me laugh – maybe smile, but nothing much more. Perhaps its not my sort of humour, so given that they were the best of the jokes in the trailer, I can see why I won’t be racing to see it anytime soon.

That’s the reaction I would expect to have too. I like quirkier comedies and Moonrise Kingdom would top my list of those this year.

I haven’t seen this one yet, but I’ll definetly catch it on DVD for Mila Kunis. Wish she was in better films, though.
