¡Feliz Día de la Independencia!
Although the fight for independence only started on September 16th, 1810 (actual independence wasn’t achieved until September 27th, 1821), today we celebrate Mexico’s independence from Spain. Me and my family are going over to nearby Rosarito and having a carne asada (our equivalent of a barbecue) at my godmother’s beachfront house. Fun!
I wanted to take this opportunity and ask all of you guys: exclusively talking about film, what are your Mexican favorites? Like, what is your favorite Mexican film? Favorite movie about or taking place in Mexico? Favorite Mexican filmmaker? Favorite Mexican actor or actress? Anything else you want to share about the country that today celebrates 202 years of independence? Share your thoughts in the comments section 🙂 ¡VIVA MÉXICO!
Favorite Filmmaker: Guillermo del Toro — I suspect Alfonso Cuarón would be there, too, if he was more prolific (I really want him to make more film!).
Favorite Actor: Anthony Quinn. Probably one of the greatest and most versatile male actors from Mexico and in the world of cinema. I have a real soft spot for the underrated and somewhat forgotten Gilbert Roland, too.
Favorite Actress: there’s no getting around the greats that were Dolores del Rio and Katy Jurado in Mexican and U.S. cinema for years past. I’m sure I don’t have to remind you that yo soy un gran aficionado de Salma Hayek ;-).
One of my favorite moments for 2012: Mexico winning the Olympic Gold for soccer.

I don’t believe I’ve seen anything from Guillermo del Toro (but I’m dying to see Pan’s Labyrinth). I was about to say Penélope Cruz for favorite Mexican actress and [REC] for favorite Mexican film, but it turns out they’re both Spanish.
Maybe it’s because I’m tired (9PM my time, and everything is EXHAUSTING here), but I can’t recall any movies I’ve seen that were set in Mexico. Though I did enjoy last year’s Puss in Boots, which seemed a bit Mexican to me (what do I know?).
