John Carter [2012]
Going in, I always have faith in movies like John Carter although they eventually let me down. In a way, this Mars-set western further advances toward achieving what Cowboys and Aliens set out to do. The latest adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s novel A Princess of Mars is a visually arresting, Asian-flavored summer actioner (despite the March release), with touches of light comedy but also too many plot threads, which is almost never a good sign. Despite its very original look, John Carter is the same silly, contrived and generic action movie. As it often happens with films that rely heavily on CGI and other technologies of the sort, it’s not very involving or entertaining. In order to save Mars, or “Barsoom” as it’s called here, Carter (Taylor Kitsch) must join forces with the Tharks, these insect-like, dopey-looking creatures a step up from Jar Jar Binks. Lynn Collins and Kitsch look positively beautiful but their performances are nothing to get excited about. There are a few noteworthy set pieces, though. The climactic wedding scene is one worthy achievement. And a desert fight interspersed with a dark memory of Carter’s past is a moment of brilliance where the editor Eric Zumbrunnen and composer Michael Giacchino really shine.
I didn’t like this movie any more than you did, HOWEVER I did kind of like Willem Dafoe as the Leader of the Tharks. Every time he called John Carter, Virginia, I laughed.

Yeah, for me it was sort of funny but it kinda grew old pretty fast. I know the Tharks were supposed to be menacing but I never felt the threat; they looked dumb.

I’m currently reading Princess of Mars (it’s available for free http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/62) and I’m having a hard time picturing how the movie will be. Considering most of the reviews out there, it sounds incredibly generic.
Nice review!

Thanks 🙂 Yeah, as I mentioned, the look is unique but under all that lies a very generic action movie.

I love how you capitalize ‘HOWEVER’ (sorry Fernando, that was for Mark, I just didn’t want to double comment). Anyway, this will not even be a film I would rent even if dying of boredom in late 2012. It just looks so stupid in every way, and John Carter really sounds, to me, more like a name of…a basketball player.

Thanks for the shout out! The basketball player comment – Were you referring to 2005’s Coach Carter perhaps?

It was a movie about basketball.

Oh. Never heard of it. Is it good?

Yeah, it’s not THAT stupid, after all it has some clever lines and humor, but it doesn’t offer anything new so don’t waste your time and money.

This movie doesn’t seem that good in any review I have read on it. I think I will pass on this review. It just seems like a forgettable B movie. Excellent review.

It’s a pretty stupid fare.

Do you post all your reviews at 9:00 am? It seems that’s what every review says. Just wondering.

I actually write them a day or two before they appear on my blog and I schedule them to go up at 9am.

I wasn’t keen on this one at all. It was too long, and I found it boring more than anything else. I’m glad you weren’t too fond of it either! I did, however, love Woola. I’m very predictable; I can’t help but love cute creatures. Even the awful The Proposal had a saving grace because of the puppy!

Haha! I’m at my school library and I just LOL’d because you reminded me of that scene where Sandra Bullock is handing the puppy to the eagle in exchange of the phone!

I actually like this more than you [assuming that your rating is 5-star rating instead of 4?] I thought it was pretty entertaining and the lead actor was decent considering he doesn’t have a lot of experience. I actually went in with neutral expectations as I’ve read some positive reviews, and it still met that. The main draw for me is the source material which actually inspired a lot of famous epics like Star Wars, Avatar, etc.

Yes, my rating is 5-star instead of 4. And trust me, I wanted to like John Carter but I just couldn’t. Maybe it’s because it failed to meet my expectations. The visuals and costumes are excellent, though. The cast didn’t impress me.

I was going to see this today, but saw another iffy movie, so will pass on it for a little while. Here is the review if you want to see it = http://moviereviewer96.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/review-the-darkest-hour/

You passed on a terrible movie to see another, possibly worse, one. Bad day for your eyes! haha

Although my brain was off and I had fun, this was a very underwhelming movie for me. I agree with your review, especially your comments on Jar Jar Binks and Cowboys & Aliens. Those exact thoughts were constantly running through my mind as I watched.
I wrote my review as a compilation of limericks. 😉 Now I bet you’re either flummoxed or excited to read it haha!!
