Jane Eyre [2011]

It’s a real shame that this exquisitely shot drama, which had its premiere all the way back in March, has fallen completely off the radar awards-wise. This talky, austere umpteenth production of Charlotte Brontë’s novel features, naturally, fantastic dialogue and assured direction, courtesy of Cary Joji Fukunaga. The cast, a veritable who’s who of British talent, shines: Amelia Clarkson as a young Jane, new A-lister Michael Fassbender, veteran Judi Dench and Jamie Bell hold their own against a marvelous Mia Wasikowska, in one of the most underrated performances of the year. As with many other costume dramas, the art direction for Jane Eyre is flawless.
