The Ides of March [2011]
It’s not particularly insightful nor does it bring anything new to the table. Hell, we can turn on the news any given day and find out this politician or that world leader actually did things way worse than what we see in the movie, but The Ides of March is a tense and engrossing political thriller. Based on Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North, Ides features excellent writing and a noteworthy ensemble where a charismatic George Clooney (practically a pleonasm), Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood are clear standouts. Ryan Gosling has been everywhere this year. In my opinion, his finest work was in the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. You could say he turns in a good performance in Ides, but mostly he just opens his eyes real wide.
I’m not so sure about this film. The trailers made it look interesting, from a general look, but they also hinted that it might just be another political thriller. If it wins Best Picture, I’ll do my best to try and see it. If it gets nominated, I’ll move it to a “probably” rather than a “maybe”. Otherwise, I’ll probably just wait till it’s playing on HBO. Nice review!

Yes, it sort of is “just another political thriller” but for me it was very engrossing and tense, plus the acting’s great. It MAY be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar but it definitely will not win.

Nice. Let me know what you think. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Evan Rachel Wood was pretty good. A very tense, exciting movie.

I just learned a new word – pleonasm. So thanks for that. I didn’t like this movie anywhere even close to how much you did, but I understand why you enjoyed it. Nice review!

You’re welcome, haha! “Pleonasmo” is a very common word in Spanish, something we use on a regular basis, so when I searched for the translation I was surprised it’s almost identical. I had never heard or read that word in English either.
