Following [1998]
A deserving preview of the massive amount of talent Christopher Nolan would display in the following years to this 1998 first work. Memento was his breakthrough and Following resembles that film’s structure but in a simpler, much more modest way. Shot in 16mm and on a $6,000 budget, Following is tense, exciting and unpredictable, albeit a little short at just 69 minutes. Alex Haw and Lucy Russell are devilishly good in this neo-noir.
Christopher Nolan is such a talent. Thanks for bringing this film to our attention.

You’re welcome. It’s always great to see any of his movies. Now I’ve watched all of his films (minus The Dark Knight Rises, of course).

Whoa. For so long I was the under the impression that 2009’s Paranormal Activity was the least expensive film produced to date (at $15,000), but after watching Following and then doing some research, it appears there is a Wikipedia page with about TWENTY cheaper titles (not adjusted for inflation), and Following sits at #1 on the list! I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as you, but I was pretty impressed. The narrative didn’t engage me nearly as much as Memento did. I really want to finish off the rest of Nolan’s filmography, as you did. I believe I only have two films left: his 2002 Insomnia remake and The Prestige. Great review, as usual, Fernando. I LOVE the new header design on your blog, by the way. Very fitting, indeed.

Oh darn I was getting all excited and it appears I didn’t look at the list closely enough. Apparently it’s not in a ranked order of any kind; Following just happens to appear at the top.

That’s very interesting. It’s amazing how these people manage to do so much with so little. Glad you liked Following, even if you didn’t like it as much as me. Nolan was just honing his craft, though, and we’ve seen how great he’s become. And yeah, you should really check out The Prestige. Like I’ve said before, it’s my favorite film by Nolan (VERY closely followed by TDK and Inception). Thanks for checking out my review and I’m glad you like the new header.
